How many Chinese words do I need for each HSK level?
Under the HSK 3.0 standard (GF0025-2021), the cumulative vocabulary is 500 words for Level 1, 1,272 for Level 2, 2,245 for Level 3, 3,245 for Level 4, 4,316 for Level 5, 5,456 for Level 6 and 11,092 for Levels 7–9.
How does the vocabulary test work?
You see a Chinese word and choose its English meaning from four options, or choose "I don’t know". Words are sampled from each HSK level and then from about 30,000 further common words ranked by how often they appear in a large Chinese corpus.
How is my vocabulary size calculated?
Your accuracy at each stage is corrected for lucky guesses and multiplied by the number of words in that stage; the total is your estimated vocabulary size, shown with a 95% margin of error. The test stops early once the words are clearly beyond your level.

How this is calculated
Words are grouped into stages by the HSK 3.0 word levels (11,000+ words across Levels 1–9), followed by about 30,000 further common words ranked by corpus frequency (BCC corpus, CC-CEDICT meanings). A small random sample is drawn from each stage. Your score in each stage is corrected for lucky guesses and multiplied by the stage size; the sum is your estimated vocabulary size. The ± range is a 95% margin of error.
